How to remove rust from my smoker

I've had a Cheyenne Smoker for a couple years and noticed a few rust spots on the lid of the firebox. What is the best way to get rid of it? What can I do to prevent this from happening in the future.?Thanx for any suggestions.

Thanx, Herb, for the great information and prompt response. Does Yoder sell the paint described in your feedback? If so, where can I order some and what is the cost. Thanx again for your help.
