Hey folks,

New owner of a Yoder YS640s.

Coming from a Pit Boss pellet smoker. It died and I didn’t want to spend more money on it.

First cook was a 4 rib beef short rib plate.

Tender enough but no smoke flavor. Cooked on top rack.

Ordered recommended pellets in hickory, cherry, pecan and oak. BBQ Delight!

Had been using Bear Mountain pecan.

Looking for any recommendations to optimize using my smoker.

Also ordered cast iron wood chip smoke generator. Maybe that will help!

Thanks in advance for any help you provide.

Cecil

Congrats on the smoker! I've had mine since April and I use it about 3-4 times a week (though less lately, living in upstate NY). I've not used one of the cast iron wood chip smoke generators, but I do have a couple of steel smoke tubes (different sizes for different lengths of time), and I use them from time to time to generate a little more smoke, but mainly I use it to cold smoke (salt, maple sugar, chocolate) without the need to turn on the Yoder. I also like it because I can just use my pellets, I don't need to get any other wood. They're available on Amazon, and I cannot recommend them enough.

I've always heard the main complaint of a pellet smoker is the lack of smoke flavor, but honestly, my Yoder gives the perfect amount for my family and me.
