Inherited a YS640

So I know nothing about grilling but I want to learn.

First I need to make sure I have all that I need for the smoker.
The Heat Diffuser shows as a solid plate in the manual. My plate has a square hole in it just above the firebox. I don't have a plate to cover that square hole and I am trying to figure out if that means I am missing a piece.

Further, are there times I would leave that hole open when grilling vs having it covered?
I know this smoker allows for direct heat. Would that be done with the meat right over that hole (and it open) or would I remove the heat diffuser entirely for that?

Signed, so-much-to-learn.

Never mind. I read the manual and this is a 2 piece diffuser and I should have the matching plate that fills the hole. I'll work on that.

I have a new question. I doubt I'll get an official answer but maybe a user will take pity on me and have an idea how to answer.
Assuming I can't find the original 2nd piece to the 2 piece diffuser plate for my YS640, what gage and kind of metal would approximate the original plate?

The heat diffusers are made out of 10ga steel, just a tad thicker then 1/8"

Thankyou for that. Much appreciated.
