For the last 2+ years I've been cooking on a Cheyenne, great smoker as a learner but have outgrown it, thought about a loaded Wichita but figured for $800 more, why not get a Kingman and be set for life, but unfortunately waited too long and now ATB has been out of Kingman's all summer.

Any idea of lead time for a new Kingman? I live in Wichita so shipping isn't an issue. Anyone have a used Kingman they want to unload (doubt it), and once I upgrade I'll have a Cheyenne in great condition ready to sell!!

So I've had a few cooks on it now and love it, love the space, the big firebox that is TONS easier to regulate thru the cook.

Just had a quick question about temp changes thru the chamber. When I keep the right 1/3rd close to 275, the middle 1/3 stays around 250, and the far left hangs at 225, and bumping the fire up or down, the differences will usually change by the same amounts.

Just curious if this is consistent with the long time kingman users around here.

Welcome to the Yoder family. The Kingman is truly a awesome pit. The behavior you are seeing isn't abnormal. You can cut this difference down by controlling the air coming into the pit and leaving the stack. I generally run the rear dampener around half open and the stack in the half closed range. Using the stack in relationship with the rear dampner should allow you to get this closer than 50 degrees. I generally run in the 25 degree range in my Kingman.

For whatever reason, I always thought you were supposed to leave the stack vent wide open and just adjust the firebox vent as needed (I usually keep it about 1/2 - 3/4 closed once the pit is up to temp).

and for fuel, pretty much identical to the video on this site, start with two chimneys of good lump with two splits to start, keep a split in the firebox to superheat, and every 45 mins to an hour, put a split on the fire, and every 2 - 3 hours put a couple handfuls of lump to help coal base.

I guess on the next smoke I'll try adjusting the stack vent to 1/2 and see how that works. That's the beauty of these pits, little adjustments here and there that you can make depending on what/how much/how long you are smoking!

So I've been messing around with the chimney vent the last couple cooks, and if I close it off at all, even 1/4, it seems to drop the temp on that side even more, that's with the firebox vent open 1/2. still running 275 on fire side and 225 on stack side

Is this the standard backyard Kingman with the removable heat management plate? Are you reading the temperature off of the gauges or a external device?

yes, standard backyard kingman with plate.

I read off the two standard gauges that came with it, plus I use a maverick and a few oven thermos.

I guess I'll just have to keep working on it every weekend, oh darn :)

question about winter care,

Does this bad boy need to be covered up during the winter, or is it ok out in the elements. I'll probably use it thru January, but it's a bit too chilly late Jan - Mid March to fire up. Will the thermos be ok in snow/ice?
