Hello all, I have been looking at pellet grills for a little while now and I'm about to make a choice. I really like the looks of the YS 640 but I also wonder how it compares to other pellet grills on the market. I asked Mike in sales and he directed me here, so I will ask this group in hopes of honest replies and information to help me make an informed decision.
I have used a Memphis pro grill and really enjoyed the grill. The controller was fantastic and the food was wonderful but I wanted a little more smoke flavor. If anybody can compare the two that would be wonderful. Also, I have considered the MAK line. Looks like a great controller but I think the results will be similar to the Memphis. I think these are all 3 great products so I guess I'm looking for a gentle nudge on which one I should choose. I do have some concerns over the controller on the YS, but not huge ones. What I really want is a great smoked flavor. I got some of that with the Memphis but maybe not quite what I was looking for and not for the price of those units! Thanks in advance for any information you provide.

Welcome aboard!

The Yoder pellet cookers, unlike the others you mentioned, have the firebox mounted to the left side, to mimic the flow characteristics of an offset wood cooker. This allows the Yoder cookers to have a much larger fire than the center mounted fireboxes, and does not require the smothering of the super hot fire to produce smoke. With the Yoder cookers, you get the same amount of smoke flavor at any cooking temperature, without the necessity of a "smoke" setting.

Thanks, that actually helps a lot. I had not considered the location of the fire box.

Just sold my Memphis Pro after 4 wonderful years of good cooking. Purchased a Yoder 480 competition and after only one week of cooking I can tell you that it cooks just as great as the Memphis . I have used the 480 for high heat grilling as well as smoking jerky and other meats.
It has a wonderful ability to distribute a great smoke flavour without it being overkill. I can still manage to get a good smoke flavour on food at a much higher temperature than the Memphis which I found lacked a bit in this area and had to be used at lower temperatures for smoking. Hope this helps and I do not think you can go wrong with the Yoder. Also the thermal cover works amazing in our cold Canadian winter.

So, I pulled the trigger yesterday and purchased the 640. Mike at Yoder was great and patient with me and I think the information here has been fantastic. Now, I have two weeks to think about what to cook first!

I set mine up with the second shelf, and did the kit for the direct grilling with the griddle. Maybe I'll do breakfast!

You made the the right decision, your going to love the Yoder YS 640, I burn real wood in my 640 and it's hands down better than any other pellet smoker out there. Enjoy it, Yoder is the cream of the crop.

I don't think you will ever regret your purchase. I hear some talk about over kill, but the quality over rides that. I fire up my 640 for just 1 chicken, and no regrets.

I'm not too worried about overkill! I figure it is better to have the extra space than actually NEED the extra space. I don't think I'll need it often, but it will be nice to have if I do need it!
