Received delivery of my YS640 today!
Been researching pellet smokers for almost two years. Finally pulled the trigger on a YS640 on black comp cart. Looking forward to the weekend. Haven't decided what the first cook is going to be. I'm gonna start with some pig candy to get her seasoned. She doesn't have a name yet.

Use the biscuit test. get two biscuit s tubes from the store, the ones with 5-8 biscuits per tube. Crank to 350 and place them around to see temp spots.

Lots say spray the inside with a good coat of Pam etc. I didn't, but I did spray all my grates and the diffuser plate.

Cranked it to 350 for 30 min, shut it off. Let it cool.

Depends where you live. If I was in Florida, I'd do the initial burn, the pay attention to the hinges on top. A bit of veg or high temp cooking oil will be fine. The front of the cooker will get gunky in time, keep it clean, I do sorta. I'm in Vegas, so humidity it low, I have it on the patio and covered. These days a once a year scrape and hose, using foil to cover the pellet hole (once I have removed 120% of the pellets) and covered the burn hole, clean and simple green, it's enuff. Almost 3 years old is my smoker. I love it.

You take care of it depending where you live you'll figure it out.

Yes.....the five week wait seemed like forever. I know I'm gonna do some pig candy first. From there....I'm letting go the family decide what they would like.

Temp zone checks with my Maverick 733 went well.
Have not done the biscuit test yet. Cooked of two trays of pig candy, and reverse seared top sirloin steaks they turned out great.

I have a question, is the gap in the door normal? It seems like a lot of smoke is escaping through the door. It's about a 1/4" gap.

The cookers are not designed to be sealed or air tight.

Hetb,
How large of a gap is considered normal?

Again, sent a PM, it fixes the problem. All smokers leak a bit, it's a smoker, not a aerospace NASA engine. The Nomex fixes it.

That said, a big gap can make a hot spot if you have a large amount of meat (60-70 lbs of butts) too close to the cover front edge, that bit of meat will cook a bit more. Which means nothing since you need to rotate the 9lb pieces of meat on the top rack and bottom rack at the 5 hr mark anyway and about 3 hours later. Heat escapes there instead of out the stack. When I do a HOT cook like steaks with the two piece cover used with grill grates, I still get a bit of smoke out of the front right corner AND the bottom left hole under the pellet hopper. Perfectly normal. No big deal. Like Herb said, they ain't meant to be air tight. Gasket helps tho.

Herb,

Thank you!
The adjustment worked great.
The door now sits flush to the chamber.
A lot more smoke goes through the stack.

Thanks again,
Trent

Wow! Herb, I never knew about this. So I did the gasket material. I'll look into it.

I got my 640 before you had all this stuff on the site.
