Smoke management- help needed

I need help to understand pls.
How, when adding wood to the coals, you dont get white and bitter smoke ?????

The wood needs to be seasoned to less than 20% moisture content. Removing the bark helps, but if the wood is seasoned properly, the bark should already be loose or falling off.

You need to preheat the wood so that it catches fire immediately when placed on the coals, instead of smoldering until it catches fire.

Herb's videos are fantastic, look them up. I'd never thought of this either. When I load a piece in the Frontiersman, it comes from the opposite side of the fire where it's been warming. I replace it with a piece that has came from the top exterior of the firebox. When I changed to this method, it solved more than one issue for me. But the obvious thing is use well seasoned wood.
