I have the 6" one. I have only been using it when direct grilling. Since the heat is so high (450f) there is not much smoke produced. I'll take a burger and Jack Daniels pellets in the tube. Put the burger on the top rack with the tube for 20-30 mins and then finish it on the grill grates. Puts a nice hint of smoke in the meat.

Other then that type of useage, I tried it once when smoking ribs at 225* but didn't get much, the cooker does such a great job producing clean (thin blue) smoke that the dirty smoke from the tube interferes. I now stick to using it as a supplement when direct grilling.

I use the 18" to cold smoke cheese. I've been happy with it so far.

I have the 18". On my previous pellet grill (GMG Daniel Boone), I used it on every cook no matter what the temp to get the proper smoke flavor. I just cooked for the first time on my YS640 this weekend and did not use the smoke tube on purpose to see what kind of smoke flavor I would get. The YS640 smoke output/flavor was awesome! I don't think I will ever use the smoke tube again except to cold smoke! Also, if you get the 18", you don't have to fill it full to use it. If you want to use it for a shorter time period, just fill it up half or a quarter way.

I have a 12" that I use on my hotter cooks. It works well. I get about 2.5 to 3hours of burn time on it when full. I agree with the others the Yoders make much more smoke than other pellet smokers and for most people that's enough smoke flavor.
