I am building an outdoor kitchen and I'd like your thoughts... I have decided to purchase a 640 and build it in. Because its a small space and under roof I think I will need to get some of the smoke out of there or I will choke. Though not doing the full range hood because of space and asthetics I will have an exhaust fan. But I am also thinking of installing a small stove pipe/chimney to the 640's smoke stack and run it out through the roof. Is there any reason why this is a bad idea for cooking? I know I'll still have some smoke (which I like and want) but at least we won't be choking in it. I have a pellet pooper but it has vents not a stack so I'm not sure if access to the stack cover is important in a 640. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

If it's an enclosed area I would'd do it. If under a patio cover just get a aluminum dryer tube and put it on the chimney. That's what I do, don't have a big brown spot on the patio cover anymore, the wife is happy.

Sometimes extending the chimney can mess up air flow due to the exhausting air changing temps and chocking the smoker. But that's not a forced air smoker like the Yoder.

Is this an enclosed area? Utilizing any type of open flame in an enclosed area is a safety hazard, unless the proper ventilation and local safety code rules are followed.

Enclosed on one side in a 9' X 14' space. I'm basically putting a roof over and counters in my current cooking area. No problem with flame. Thanks for the templates Herb.

I think installing a chimney will be a good idea as chimneys play an important role to draw the smoke and gases produced by a fire up and safely out. One of my friends does the same thing, he called professional chimney liner installation from long island for proper installation.

My YS640 is on my side patio - we have a split level home and there is a bottom and top patio on the side of our home. It just so happens that my neighbor's patio is on the same side and so I knew I had to plan for the smoke after my first few operations. I eventually moved it to the top patio and still got a bunch of smoke infiltration into the house, so...

This made a huge difference in being able to vent the majority of the smoke from the pipe. However, I still get some smoke escaping from the door. Has anyone tried a silicone sealer or nomex around the door seal?

I bought a 11$ dryer duct from Kmart. With a wire tie. Been good for 2 years. Remove it, toss in the patio corner when I ain't smokin'.

Yours is much nicer and gets in the way when not smokin. Your roof is much higher than mine. Looks great, nice job! When it gets that long you worry about the stack being cold and smoke not having 'flow'. It's important in stick smokers a LOT more. In fact that would be a fire killer. But with the Yoder being a positive feed due to the fans you should be fine. See what happens in the winter eh?

The door seal I use for almost 3 years is 3/4" wide roll of Nomex white high temp sealing tape from the river in Brazil. They have a thing called Prime Membership. It's sold in one sided sticky rolls. And sold at other places too. Make sure you super scrub and alcohol wipe when you put it on the DOOR side all around. I'd post links to great guides but we can't post links here to other places.
