Would running out of pellets for over an hour cause the igniter rod to go out? Does it ever come back on after initial start up?

Running out of pellets will not make the igniter go bad. To restart after running out of pellets, you need to turn the switch off, unplug power, clean all ash from the burn grate and firebox, put a 1/2 cup of pellets in the burn grate, and restart the cooker.

I am aware of that. But after running out of pellets my igniter rod went bad.

Did you unplug the cooker, wait 30 seconds, and try again?

The igniter is warrantied for 1 year from build date, or purchase date with proof of purchase. If it is out of the 1 year warranty, you may purchase a replacement igniter by calling 877.409.6337, option 2 or by ordering online here: https://www.atbbq.com/yoder-smokers-ys- ... niter.html

If it is within the 1 year warranty, send an email with your name, shipping address and phone number, along with the serial number and build date of the cooker to customerservice@yodersmokers.com, or call 877.409.6337, option 2

The manual says. The igniter runs for 5 minutes then shuts off. By then the pellets should be ignited. It it doesn't get hot ( a safe finger check will tell you that) then it's bad. You can recheck easily by cleaning the burn pot, unplugging the unit, and restarting it about a minute later. If the pellets (or your finger don't begin to burn, yep your igniter has failed.

I have had mine for over 4 years and it has not failed. I did buy a spare just in case.

You are welcome to check the connection and OHM reading of the igniter if you want. There is a measurement supplied on ths website.

Glad you called in to discuss this. As discussed, not cleaning the ash from the burn grate and firebox, and not unplugging to reset the controller in this case, will fix the situation.
