So I was thinking about using some magnets to hold some foil in place when i wrap the heat deflector before a cook.

As of late i haven't been foiling it but I'm getting lazy and leave all the oil on it and I'm getting sick of scraping everything off.

what sort of magnets would withstand bbq temps without sliding off?

Use heavy bolts and washers. Many magnets lose thier magnetics when heated.

Big bolts and washers. There isn't much air flow at all above the diffuser plate. Works for me.
